The famous politician, Themistocles, was chorêgos for Phrynichus in 476 BCE for his Phoenician Women, a play about the defeat of the Persians (to which Themistocles had made a great contribution). He must have volunteered. Pericles as a young man was chorêgus for the production that included Aeschylus’s Persians in 472 BCE, and whether or not he had specific political goals connected with the plays being shown, he surely wanted to promote himself. We do not hear of famous men as chorêgoi for tragedy later.
In 442 BCE, tragedy was added to the program at the Lenaia, a winter festival of Dionysus. Two tragedies each by two poets were performed (at least in the fifth century), and there were no satyr plays. It appears that although comic poets made little distinction between competition at the Lenaia and at the Dionysia, for tragedians the Dionysia had more prestige. For one thing, the Lenaian audience was almost exclusively Athenian. No representatives of the allies were present, and the sailing season had not started yet.
